Ordering coffee in Buenos Aires. Navigating a market in Rome. Checking into a hotel in Paris. Every scene has a goal — complete the checkpoints, get feedback on every response.
Ordering coffee in Buenos Aires
¡Buenos días! ¿Qué desea ordenar?
Greet the barista and order a coffee
Hola, quiero un café con leche por favor.
Perfecto, un café con leche. ¿Algo más?
Ask if they have any pastries
¿Puedo obtener unos pasteles?
“Obtener” is a direct translation of “to get.” It’s understandable, but a native speaker would not order food that way. In Spanish, you don’t need a verb like “obtener” to ask — just use “¿Tienes...?”
Better
¿Tienes pasteles también?
Order two croissants
Ask for the total
Dialog Engine adjusts how you respond based on your proficiency. Start with structured choices. As your rating climbs and you perform well, you write freely.
Buying bread in Paris
Bonjour ! Bienvenue à la boulangerie. Qu’est-ce que je peux vous offrir ?
Greet the baker and ask for a baguette
Ask how much it costs
Pay and say goodbye
Your task
Greet the baker and ask for a baguette
Bonjour, je voudrais une baguette, s’il vous plaît.
Je suis une baguette.
Où est la gare ?
At lower levels, we care most about whether you got your point across. As you improve, naturalness and form carry more weight.
Comprehensibility
Could a native speaker understand you? This is always the priority — if you can’t communicate, nothing else matters.
Naturalness
Does it sound like something a native would actually say? This is what separates textbook Spanish from real Spanish.
Form
Grammar, conjugation, spelling. Important, but weighted more heavily as your level increases.
Clear and natural. “Querría” is the right register for ordering — polite without being overly formal.
“Actuellement” means “currently,” not “actually.” Use “en fait” instead.
Better
En fait, je cherche la gare.
“Vorrei il bagno” means “I’d like the bathroom.” To ask where it is, you need “dov’è.”
Better
Scusi, dov’è il bagno?
Most apps give you points for showing up. Complete a lesson? +10 XP. Maintain your streak? +50 XP. But XP doesn't measure skill — it measures engagement.
We use an ELO rating system — the same mathematical model used to rank chess players worldwide. Your rating changes based on how you perform relative to the difficulty of what you're practicing.
